국립현대미술관은 차세대 미술을 이끌 창작자를 발굴하고 다학제간 협업을 지원하는 공모사업 《프로젝트 해시태그 2022》의 최종 선발팀으로 ‘로스트에어’(Lost Air⋅이우경, 이다영, 박주영, 박민주)와 ‘크립톤’(Crypton⋅황수경, 정민주, 염인화)을 발표하였습니다.
올해 《프로젝트 해시태그 2022》는 많은 지원팀들이 NFT(Non-Fungible Token, 대체 불가능 토큰), 메타버스와 같은 가상세계의 활용을 주요 방법론으로 내세우는 공통점을 보였습니다. 심리나 감정에 대한 주제도 눈에 띄었는데 이는 코로나19 이후 사회적 고립과 거리두기에서 오는 인간의 외로움과 소외, 나아가 삶과 죽음을 환기하며 나타난 결과로 여겨졌습니다. 심사위원들은 기획자들이 가상의 메타버스만큼이나 실존의 문제에 집중하고 있음을 양가적으로 드러냈다고 평했습니다. 특히 코로나19 이후 실재와 가상의 물리적 접점, 지구 환경과 생태 위기에 대한 흥미로운 접근들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
이번 《프로젝트 해시태그 2022》 공모는 3월 1일부터 31일까지 진행됐으며 다양한 영역 108팀의 지원자들이 참가했습니다. 그중 다섯 팀이 서류심사에 통과하여 최종 면접 심사를 진행했습니다. 면접 심사에는 네덜란드 국립 건축, 디자인 및 디지털 문화 박물관인 헷 뉴어 인스티튜트(Het Nieuwe Instituut)의 총책임자이자 예술 감독인 아릭 첸(Aric Chen), 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute) 객원 교수이자 더월드어라운드(The World Around)의 창립자인 비아트리스 갈릴리(Beatrice Galilee), 김준기 국립현대미술관 학예실장, 박수진 학예연구관, 김형미 학예연구사가 참여하였습니다.
심사에 참여한 아릭 첸은 “선정팀을 포함한 5팀 모두 예술적, 창의적 실천뿐만 아니라, 우리가 사람, 사회 및 행성으로서 직면한 큰 문제를 대처하는 데 필요한 접근 방식을 반영했다”고 평했습니다. 5명의 심사위원들은 《해시태그 프로젝트》의 취지에 맞게 현 시점에서 고민해봐야 할 문제를 미술관 안에서 실험해보는 태도가 중요하며, 그 결과로 파생될 새로운 시각을 만들어내는 장으로서 이 프로젝트가 기능할 수 있기를 바란다는 총평을 남겼습니다.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea announced Lost Air(Lee Woogyeong, Park Juyeong, Park Minju, and Lee Dayoung) and Crypton(Hwang Sukyung, Jeong Minju, and Yeom Inhwa) as the two winners of PROJECT HASHTAG 2022, a contest for discovering next-generation leaders of Korean art and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations.
In this year’s contest, many contestants proposed the use of virtual reality such as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, and the metaverse as a common methodology. Thematically, numerous entries dealt with human psychology, feelings of exclusion and loneliness, and the meaning of life and death, apparently caused by social isolation and distancing resulting from COVID-19. Judges found that the contestants showed as much interest in the metaverse and virtual realm as existential problems and noted intriguing approaches to exploring the point of intersection between reality and virtual reality in the post-COVID era and the global environment and ecological crisis.
PROJECT HASHTAG 2022 ran from March 1 to 31 and attracted 108 contestant teams from various fields. Five teams were selected through an application review for the final interview, whose judges were Aric Chen, general and artistic director of Het Nieuwe Instituut, a national museum of architecture, design, and digital culture in the Netherlands, visiting professor at Pratt Institute in New York, and founder of the World Around Beatrice Galilee, and MMCA curators Gim Jungii, Park Soojin, and Hyoungmi Kim.
At the end of the interview, Aric Chen remarked, “All five teams including the final winners demonstrated not only creative artistic praxis but also optimal approaches to the big problems we face as humanity, society, and a planet.” The five judges stressed the importance of museums to maintain the experimental attitude advocated by PROJECT HASHTAG 2022 to take on the most crucial issues of this era, and that they hope the project provides a fountain of new perspectives.
